Monday Mindset: Panic Reactions

Yesterday, my two 3-year-old cats, who’ve never been outside, managed to push out a window screen and jump from the window into the yard. I don’t know the time lag between when they made their escape and me discovering the window wide open – but when I went outside to find them – there was no sign of either anywhere.

In no time at all, I went from comfort to panic. I live in a densely wooded area with lots of undergrowth. One of my cats has a location chip. The other, who’s a bit timid, does not. My mind immediately went to the worst-case scenarios. I automatically and quickly convinced myself I might never see them again.

I called a friend who’s always there for me, and despite his efforts to calm me down with his calm rationality, my panic was overwhelming. I started having a panic attack and told my friend that he wasn’t being helpful by being rational.

A few minutes later, he arrived at my house as I was sitting at my computer about to create missing posters to take around the neighborhod. He told me he had just seen my tabby in the yard. I rushed outside, and sure enough, there he was. Then we found the other cat hiding under the shed. I had combed through the entire yard and somehow missed them – but there they were safe and sound, albeit a bit wet and dirty.

In today’s podcast, Stephanie and I discuss what happens when we encounter the “PANIC ZONE”

We also share some “reprogramming hacks” to help navigate or mitigate these reactions when we find ourselves in such situations. Stephanie emphasizes the importance of breath and breathing: while I suggest finding those places and activities where you feel most comfortable to help guide you back into your comfort zone.

Before I close today, a couple weeks ago I wrote in Monday Mindset: The Company You Keep “Embrace the people who are reliable, have a positive outlook, understand you, offer solutions, share your mission, and cheer you on when you are struggling.” There’s likely someone in your circle – like my friend who helped me when my cats were out – who can be that support when you find yourself in the panic zone.  Know who your friends are and who can help you navigate through those “panic zone” times.

As always, the team at WEBB is here for you! Our calendars are below – let us know how we can help.

That’s our Monday Mindset reminder for this week. Have a happy, productive week!
