Monday Mindset: Independence vs. Interdependence

For the past three weeks, I’ve had the privilege of working with five WEBB Squared entrepreneurs in a deep dive into storytelling techniques. Together, we explored how stories can shape values, missions, marketing strategies, and brand identities for their businesses. As we approached the final week of this transformative journey, something profound emerged—a collective desire to continue supporting one another beyond the confines of this program. This realization sparked a meaningful conversation about the shift from independence to interdependence.

The Power of Interdependence in Entrepreneurship

One of the core goals of our study group was to move beyond the traditional model of independent entrepreneurship and embrace a culture of interdependence. Independence is often celebrated as the hallmark of success—being self-reliant, resourceful, and autonomous. While these qualities are essential, they are not the ultimate destination. True growth happens when independent individuals recognize their mutual dependence and intentionally foster relationships that uplift everyone involved.

Interdependence is about creating a network of support where entrepreneurs can collaborate, share resources, and amplify each other’s successes. It’s about making referrals, offering encouragement, and building bridges that lead to collective progress. At WEBB Squared, we define interdependence as “developing intentional mutual relationships”—a value that permeates everything we do.

As Dr. Stephen Covey aptly said, “Independent people who do not have the maturity to think and act interdependently may be good individual producers, but they won’t be good leaders or team players.” This paradigm shift from “I” to “we” is not just a strategy; it’s a mindset that fosters resilience and innovation.

Lessons from Our Study Group

When we began this journey, I told the participants that I envisioned our marketing course as a “study group.” My role wasn’t just to teach but to learn alongside them. This collaborative approach allowed us to exchange ideas freely and grow together. Each entrepreneur brought unique insights and experiences to the table, enriching our discussions and expanding our perspectives.

By the third week, it became clear that this wasn’t just a temporary group—it was the beginning of something bigger. We started envisioning ways to remain connected and support each other’s entrepreneurial journeys even after the program ended. This desire for continued collaboration exemplifies what it means to practice interdependence.

Why Interdependence Matters

The shift toward interdependence is not just about building stronger businesses; it’s about creating a more inclusive and equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem. At WEBB Squared, we believe that economic strength comes from empowering all communities. By fostering interdependent relationships among entrepreneurs, we can bridge divides across race, ethnicity, and class while addressing systemic inequalities.

This approach is deeply rooted in WEBB Squared’s mission to reduce wealth disparities among Black and brown entrepreneurs in rural areas. Through workshops, coaching programs, and networking opportunities, we aim to cultivate an environment where collaboration thrives, and every entrepreneur has the tools they need to succeed.\

Moving Forward Together

As we wrapped up our final session last week, I was filled with gratitude for the connections we had built and the lessons we had learned together. The journey from independence to interdependence is not always easy—it requires vulnerability, trust, and a willingness to grow—but it is undoubtedly worth it.
As an African proverb reminds us: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Let’s choose to go far—together
