Monday Mindset: Reprogramming Your Habits – Embracing New Identities for Lasting Change
Understanding Habits
So, why is changing a habit often so difficult? It turns out that our brains are wired for routine. According to Dr. Joe Dispenza, a world-renowned authority on the power of the mind-body connection, a neuroscientist and international lecturer, the average person thinks 60 to 70 thousand thoughts a day, with a staggering 90% of those thoughts being the same as the day before. This repetition can feel like being stuck on automatic repeat!
Habits are driven by a cycle of four components: a cue or trigger, the yearning for a reward, the action, and finally the reward. This pattern becomes ingrained in our subconscious, making it challenging to break free from habits that no longer serve us.
In our latest podcast episode, Stephanie and I dive deep into the world of habits and how we can reprogram them for a better, more fulfilling life. It’s amazing how small changes can lead to significant transformations!

As promised, we offer up a very significant habit changing “hack” – which deeply examines the power of our identity and transforms how we see ourselves. In order to change unhealthy habits to habits that serve us – it all comes down to overwriting any limiting beliefs that hold us back.
The Power of Visualization
One effective strategy we discussed is deliberately claiming a new identity. This can involve visualization exercises, such as picturing yourself as a writer, baker, or any other role you aspire to embody. Visualizing the daily routines and choices of that identity can help align your actions with your goals.
As you adopt new behaviors, they become less daunting because your subconscious begins to align with this new self. Remember, creating change means consistently choosing thoughts and actions that support your new identity.
Embrace the Challenge
We encourage you to embrace this challenge! Identify a new identity or characteristic of the person you want to become and start incorporating change by doing one small thing that this new identity would do. These small, consistent changes can lead to significant transformation from the inside out.
Conclusion
So, strategically claiming a new identity is our first hack for the week. Your new self is waiting – step into it with intentionality and courage! Remember, change is a journey, and every small step counts. Join us on this exciting journey of reprogramming habits and reshaping our lives!
Food for thought on Identity and Self-Perception:
- How do the concepts of self-perception and socialization influence an individual’s identity and behaviors?
- What role does negative self-talk play in shaping a person’s self-image and actions?
- How can someone begin to shift their identity to support new habits?
- Describe the visualization exercise suggested. How can visualizing an aspirational identity help with behavior change? Why is consistency important in the process of change?
Practical Application:
- Think about a habit you would like to change or one you want to add to your life and routine. What specific action should you take to incorporate the new habit or behavior into your life?
- Does the habit or behavior accompany an identity change?
- In what ways can the “New You” influence the change?
Much of our understanding and conversation on habits come from James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits: An easy and proven way to build good habits and break bad ones”. The book is available at Amazon for $13. Stephanie and I highly recommend it.
