Monday Mindset: Embracing Failure as Opportunity

As an artist, I’ve heard praise for my work, but it wasn’t always that way. In fact, for the first eight years of my acrylic painting journey, I struggled—a lot. I vividly recall countless pieces that felt like failures, lacking in composition, color, or flow. My early struggles resulted in a closet full of reminders of those challenging times.
Yes, you could say that some of my attempts to create art were failures, and some were significant ones.
Too often, when things don’t go right the first time, we label our efforts as failures and internalize this as a reflection of ourselves—”I’m a failure.” When we do this, our negative inner critic gains power, and we may become hesitant to continue. I’m not entirely sure what kept me going in my artistic pursuits, but I persevered. I sought guidance from excellent teachers and even a few not-so-great ones—one of whom suggested I give up. But I persisted, viewing each setback not as a failure, but as an opportunity to evolve as an artist.
This same mindset applies to our entrepreneurial endeavors. Not every day brings success, and some days may feel like failures. In those moments, we must resist letting our inner critic triumph. We can silence that voice by consciously reminding ourselves, “This setback is not a failure; it’s a chance to learn and grow.”
