Monday Mindset: Letting go of negative self-talk and embracing change
Last week, in a meeting with Joseph, WEBB’s Communications Liaison, I was lamenting how I have some fitness goals that I’m not meeting. I was feeling guilty about letting myself rest instead of getting out and exercising. My “I should go for a walk” instead of resting was a self-incrimination – guilt, negative self-talk, beating myself up – rather than recognition that I do need balance in my work and personal life. Joseph reminded me that rest is just as important as exercise, and shared some insight that I asked him to write up so we might share in today’s Monday Mindset email.

Often we beat ourselves up with negative talk and/or other self-inflicting disciplines because we have not made changes that we have set for ourselves. Here is a four step process that will help you make the changes that you want to see:
- Set realistic goals of changes
- We don’t start from a clean slate. To change something references to stop or altering a previous action first.
- Place your changes on a priority list
- Every change is not valued the same. Improving your marketing strategy may not be as important as finding a more efficient way to keep track of business expenses.
- Set changes/timeline for change according to their placement on your priority list
- There is no magic wand to make all changes happen at the same time.
- Be open to how you interpret change
- We tend to have a single image of how changes are to be made. You may want to take a 30 minute walk every morning. Mornings may not be the best time for you to go walking. Instead of beating yourself up, adjust your approach, take two 15 minute walks at different times. The same outcome.
Food for thought:
- What impact does negative self-talk have on our ability to make changes? Reflect on how self criticism can hinder personal growth and motivation.
- How can prioritizing changes help in achieving goals? Think about the importance of distinguishing between various changes and their significance.
- How can being open to different interpretations of change improve your approach?
- What alternative strategies can you implement if your initial plan for change doesn’t work?
- How can your adjust your approach toward successful outcomes without self-criticism?

Hope to see you soon!
