Monday Mindset: What Makes a Habit a “Habit?”

Habits shape our daily lives, guiding our actions and influencing our outcomes for the better, and sometimes for the worst. At WEBB Squared, an essential part of our mindset work with entrepreneurs is working to understand the science behind habits. Arming ourselves with this knowledge can help us transform our routines and unlock our full potential to become the most successful entrepreneurs and share our passion with the world.

At their core, habits are subconscious routines that become automatic over time – routines repeated regularly. Every habit is driven by a four-part cycle: cue, yearning, response, and reward. Each one of these components play a crucial role in forming and sustaining habits.

In today’s podcast, Stephanie and Rinnie discuss these four components, because to change habits or add new habits requires understanding of subconscious components – and bring the subconscious cues and yearnings into our conscious mind.

It’s crucial to recognize that habits are not merely routines, but complex behaviors influenced by deep-seated emotional drives. By consciously modifying these elements, we can replace unproductive habits with ones that align with our goals and values.

Today’s talking points include:

1. What makes a habit a habit? The four components of a Habit
2. A deep dive into each of the components
3. How habits impact time and productivity
4. Habits – joy and regret

Food for thought:

  • How can understanding the habit cycle help in breaking a negative habit? Provide an example of how you might change a habit by modifying one of the components of the cycle.
  • Why is it important to recognize the emotional drives behind habits? How can this awareness assist in transforming habits to align with your personal and professional goals?
  • How does the concept of habit cycles relate to productivity and goal achievement?

Much of our understanding and conversation on habits come from James Clear’s book “Atomic Habits: An easy and proven way to build good habits and break bad ones”.  The book is available at Amazon for $13.  Stephanie and I highly recommend it.
