Monday Mindset: “What’s Your Story?” The Power Behind Your Entrepreneurial Journey

When we meet someone new, one of the first questions we’re often asked is, “What do you do?” It’s an innocent enough question, but how many of us immediately interpret it as, “What work do you do?” It’s funny because while we’re quick to provide an answer, often we’re leaving out the most important part—the story behind why we do what we do.

I’ve been asked this question countless times, and my response is usually something like, “My friend and I started a non-profit organization to provide services to rural-based Black and Brown entrepreneurs in Chatham and surrounding counties.” But what’s often missing from that answer is the deeper story—the why and how WEBB came to be.

There’s a story behind WEBB Squared, just like there’s a story YOUR business and YOUR adventure in entrepreneurship. Maybe you started your business because you were passionate about something. Maybe you saw a problem and knew you had the creative solution to solve it. Or perhaps, you started your business to supplement your income and create more financial freedom.

No matter how or why you began your entrepreneurial journey, there’s one thing that rings true for all of us: there’s a story behind every business. And this story is more than just a backstory—it reflects your mission, your values, and the why behind everything you do.

At WEBB Squared, we work with entrepreneurs who come from all walks of life. We help them share their stories, understand their motivations, and connect with their “why” in a way that drives their business forward. Understanding your story isn’t just about crafting a compelling elevator pitch; it’s about grounding yourself in what truly matters to you and your business.

Why is this important? Because, at the core of every thriving business, there’s a mission that speaks louder than any sales pitch ever could. Your story helps you clarify that mission and communicate it in a way that attracts the right people to your cause—whether that’s customers, investors, or collaborators. Your story reflects your brand.

So today or this week, take time to reflect: What is my story?  What is the story behind my business?

If you haven’t thought about it in a while, now might be the perfect time to revisit it. Whether you started your business out of passion, necessity, or innovation, your story is your compass. It guides your decisions, fuels your drive, and connects you to the larger community that will help your business grow.

With a grant from the PNC Foundation, WEBB has created a story-telling module “Story-Driven Marketing: Crafting Content that Resonates” with the following objectives to help you

  1. Fine-tune your brand,
  2. Create marketing content to help you connect with your target market.

For 4-weeks starting Thursday, February 13, a group of us will be meeting from 5:30 pm to 8 pm to study together how story shapes our business, brand, and marketing.  Please join us!

It’s our hope that the next time someone asks, “What do you do?” take a moment to consider the bigger picture. Share your story. Don’t just tell them the work you do—tell them why you created your business and how your business can make a difference in their lives.

If you are not able to join us in February, we’ll offer another opportunity in April, or you can talk with Rinnie and Stephanie today about the resources available to help you market your business.

Your story is the heartbeat of your business. We can help you “own it”, and let it shine through in everything you do.
